Ground preparation is key to establishing a healthy hedge. Where possible, dig a trench and enrich it with organic matter; otherwise, ensure the planting area is weed-free. Protect young plants from pests using fencing or tree guards such as spirals, canes, shelters or stakes. See our Tree Nursery Catalogue for details of the guards available. Newly planted hedges benefit from regular weed control, either by hand or with mulch such as lawn clippings, and should be watered well during dry periods.
